Winning the World Cup is the biggest achievement any footballer can attain. It is the most coveted trophy in the history of the sport, and despite its glory, not all the biggest stars in football have laid their hands on it.
While some have argued that winning the World Cup defines football legacies, that school of thought is not a universal truth. However, no matter how iconic a player may be, not winning the World Cup feels like a huge void in their trophy cabinet.
For players like Zlatan who had all the talent and aura that comes with an illustrious career, the setup of their national team kept them from winning the World Cup or even competing in a meaningful way.
For others like Cristiano Ronaldo, Eusebio and George Best, playing in a great national team also didn’t guarantee that they would walk away with the trophy.
The World Cup shows that football relies on a huge bit of luck, just as much as it relies on skill, mastery, tactics and teamwork.
Here are some of the best players to never win the World Cup.
Roberto Baggio
Baggio is one of the finest strikers of his generation, and his stats do well to prove that. With 205 goals and 119 assists in 452 games, while winning a handful of trophies in the Italian Serie A, Baggio was one of Italy’s finest.
However, the most iconic moment of his career came in the final of the 1994 World Cup as he stepped up to take what would have been the deciding penalty to help Italy to their fourth World Cup title.
For fans at the time, it felt like a done deal. Their best player at the tournament, who had just won the Ballon d’Or the previous year, was supposed to score to keep them in contention. But alas, Baggio missed, and he stood still at the penalty spot, like a man who had seen flashes of the afterlife.
Roberto Baggio would hang up his boots in 2004, and guess what? Italy became World Cup champions in 2006.
Marco van Basten
Dutch legend Marco van Basten was a special talent during his playing days.
Despite having a career that ended at the age of 28 due to multiple ankle injuries, van Basten won three Ballon d’Or awards in 1988, 1989, and 1992.
He also won three Serie A titles, two European Cups, and helped the Netherlands win the Euro 1988, which happens to be their only international trophy to date.
As for the World Cup, Van Basten didn’t stand a chance when he played at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where West Germany sent the Netherlands packing in the first knockout round.
Paolo Maldini
For Italy and AC Milan, Maldini was a stalwart and the man who made defending feel like art.
Having played over 1,000 games for club and country and dominating the Serie A with AC Milan, Maldini is regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time.
While Maldini was a serial winner at club level, that success didn’t translate to the international stage. Maldini not only failed to win the World Cup, but he also failed to win the Euros with Italy despite being in the dream team for the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups, as well as Euro 2000.
Although he kept playing till 2009, he retired from the national team in 2002, a decision he probably regrets as Italy went on to win the World Cup in 2006.
Luka Modric
After crashing out of the 2026 World Cup following Croatia’s 2-1 loss to Portugal in the round of 32, Luka Modric could end his international career without a World Cup trophy.
Modric remains one of the best midfielders of his generation and a member of an elite class of players to have won the Ballon d’Or in the Messi and Ronaldo era.
After moving from Tottenham to Real Madrid, Modric became part of the Los Blancos side that three-peated the UEFA Champions League and had Europe in chokehold.
Modric came closest to winning the World Cup in 2018 when Croatia lost the final 4-2 to France. In 2022, Croatia finished third at the World Cup, with Modric once again dictating the tempo of games.
The World Cup in 2026 was his last dance, and while he didn’t win it, he can walk away knowing he gave his all for his country’s ambitions.
Michel Platini
Before the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe became national heroes for Les Bleus of France, Michel Platini was the best thing to come out of France.
He was a three-time Ballon d’Or winner and a major part of the Juventus side that dominated Serie A between 1983 and 1985.
Despite being a midfielder, Platini had an eye for goal and went on to become one of the greatest goalscoring midfielders football has ever seen. In 585 appearances, he bagged 314 goals and recorded 74 assists.
For France, Platini scored 41 goals in 72 games to win EURO 1984 before ultimately falling short at the World Cup, with France crashing out at the semi-finals of the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.
Oliver Kahn
Before Germany had Manuel Neuer, it had Oliver Kahn, who is one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.
In his playing days, he was nicknamed “The Titan”, due to his leadership and commanding presence in the box. Kahn spent his professional career in the Bundesliga, winning eight league titles, six DFB-Pokals and one UEFA Champions League.
He remains the only goalkeeper to win the Golden Ball at the World Cup. However, at the 2002 World Cup, where he achieved this feat, he made a huge error in the final, which gifted Ronaldo the opener as Germany lost the final 2-0.
David Beckham
“Bend it like Beckham” was the popular phrase during David Beckham’s playing days. The English midfielder had a reputation for scoring some of the best free kicks you could find in the history of the sport.
He still holds the record for most free kicks in the Premier League(18), while scoring a total of 65 free kicks for club and country. Beckham was part of the Manchester United side that dominated the Premier League from 1995 to 2003.
However, he didn’t enjoy the same success with the national team. Beckham made 115 appearances for the Three Lions of England and never lifted a major international trophy with the team.
He featured in three World Cups from 1998 to 2006 and captained the team in two of those.
In 1998, Beckham was crucified by the media as the reason England exited the competition at the round of 16 after his infamous red card vs Argentina.
England hung on for a 2-2 draw in extra time but were beaten 4-3 on penalties. Beckham made up for the red card by scoring the winning penalty vs Argentina in a group game at the 2002 World Cup.
England would, however, crash out of the competition in the quarter-finals, with the same fate repeating itself in the 2006 World Cup, where they were beaten 3-0 on penalties by Portugal.
Neymar
After making his debut for the national team in 2010, Neymar was dubbed the future of the Brazilian national team. Coming from a country known for producing some of the best footballing talents ever, Neymar played the game with the Brazilian flair that made many fall in love with the sport.
Neymar moved from Santos to Barcelona, where he became part of that iconic trio with Messi and Suarez. Even before his big-money move to PSG, Neymar was seen as the third greatest player of his generation. For some, his footballing ability and accolades aren’t really appreciated because he happened to play in the same era as Messi and Ronaldo, who took the game to a whole new level.
Throughout his international career, Neymar made himself into somewhat of a legend. He is Brazil’s top scorer with 80 goals, joining Pele as the only Brazilians to score in four World Cups.
His trophy cabinet, on the other hand, falls short of his legendary status. He didn’t win a World Cup or Copa America, retiring from the national team in 2026 following Brazil’s 2-1 loss to Norway at the 2026 World Cup.
Johan Cruyff
Cruyff’s work both as a player and coach makes him one of the most influential figures in football history.
Cruyff was a magician. His skillfulness made it nearly impossible to get the ball off him. He is famous for the “Cruyff turn” and the term “Total Football,” which revolutionized the playing styles of Barcelona, Ajax, and the Dutch national team.
As a player, he won nine Eredivisie titles, three European Cups, three Ballon d’Ors, one International Cup, and one La Liga title. However, his trophy cabinet doesn’t contain a World Cup despite coming close in 1974 when the Netherlands lost 2-1 to West Germany in the final. Cruyff left that tournament with the best player award.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo, who is arguably the greatest player of all time, will walk away from football, knowing only one major trophy is missing from his achievements.
Ronaldo is the embodiment of football excellence, and his misadventures at the World Cup are a reminder that sometimes, life can be cruel to even the best and most hardworking of us.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest goal scorer in football history, three-peated the UEFA Champions League, while holding the record for most goals and assists in the same competition.
He has dominated in every league he has played, and judging by his standards, you would expect him also to scoop the World Cup, but despite appearing in six editions (the joint-most in history, tied with Messi and Ochoa), Ronaldo still hasn’t laid his hands on a World Cup trophy.
The closest he has come was the semifinals in 2006 when France eliminated Portugal. In the remaining five editions, Portugal and Ronaldo reached the round of 16 three times, quarter-finals once, and exited at the group stage once.
Although he managed to get 11 goals in 27 World Cup games, Ronaldo will only be remembered for the iconic hat-trick vs Spain in 2018. He also has the most goals in international football(146) while winning one Euro and two Nations League titles with Portugal.
With age no longer on his side, Portugal’s exit in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup following a 1-0 loss to Spain has closed the curtains on Ronaldo’s hopes of adding a World Cup trophy to his illustrious career, one that has delivered the best era in football history.
